LILY:

Lily's story before she was adopted: 03/08- Lily has had a lot of hardship in her short six months of life. She was rescued with her sister from a neglectful backyard breeder situation when she was about 10 weeks old. Both pups, purportedly Pomeranian/Cavalier King Charles Spaniel mixes, had a bad case of demodex mange, which her rescuer had begun treating.

One day, when she was about four months old, Lily snuck underfoot, causing the woman to trip over her. In the process, the woman accidentally kicked the poor puppy down the basement stairs. It was obvious when she got down to her that something was broken, so she rushed her to the veterinarian. X-rays showed that Lily’s elbow was broken, and the vet explained to the woman that surgery performed by a specialist was necessary, and that the cost would be at least $2400.

The bill was far more than the kind woman could afford, but there were few alternatives. She instructed the vet to euthanize Lily, since she couldn’t afford to treat her. Fortunately for Lily, the vet’s office contacted P.A.W.S. of Michigan, who immediately agreed to take her and get the surgery she needed. It was an emotional and tearful scene when the P.A.W.S. dog adoption coordinator retrieved Lily. Her guardian was extremely relieved to know she’d live and get the treatment she needed, yet broken up at parting with her.

While P.A.W.S. didn’t hesitate to take Lily, it was an intimidating moment for the group. We are a newly formed rescue group, and at that time had been in existence less than five months. The thought of spending so much of our treasury on one animal was frightening, but the Board of Directors unanimously agreed that we had to help her, and we’d find a way to raise the money.

Our own vet confirmed the diagnosis of the first doctor, and put us in touch with an orthopedic surgeon. Lily’s surgery was scheduled within two days. The poor pup was in so much obvious pain during that time, even with pain medication. The surgery involved the insertion of screws into Lily’s tiny elbow.

But now Lily has been adopted, fully healed, into a loving family.  Please read the letter her new family wrote to her foster mom:

Dear mom,

Just wanted to let you know how my first day has gone with my new family. I am enjoying myself very much. They are very nice people and have given me run of the house and back yard. I have almost mastered the flippety-floppety pet door thing. The food here is just terrific. I have some kibbles in the morning for breakfast and some Beneful moist food for supper. Yum.

My new brother Mr. Zoomer is a bit stand offish but we have not had any trouble. He let me know yesterday that he does not like me to get right into his face and he gave me a quick snap. But you know how quick I am and he missed me nya-nya. He did let me sniff him a bit without any grumbling (just not his face, hmmf). He is just old and I can tell that he is just letting me know that it is his house and no young whipper snapper, as he called me, will take it over. So what's a whipper snapper?

Any how my new mom went out and bought me some treats and a couple toys. One is a squeaky rubber elephant that I just love to sit and chomp on just to hear the squeak-squeak noise, and she also bought me a tennis ball which I just think is way cool. I have been teaching my new mom how to play fetch and I think she is getting the hang of it.

Yesterday my new aunt came over and brought a 5 week old cousin (Pug puppy) to meet me. We had a great time rolling around on the floor. He would pounce on me and bite my ears and I would paw at him to roll him on the floor and then push him with my nose and lick him. I knew he was a little fella so I didn't play too rough with him. We had a great time and I hope he comes over more often.

I also met Steve when he came home from working at the Detroit Zoo. I barked at him for coming into my new house without knocking. Hey, how was I to know he lived there? Anyhow, we made friends right away and I sniffed the news on his clothes for a long time. I got whiffs of Rhinoceros, Elephants, and a bunch of other animals. I like him and he likes me back.

I have made myself at home and take naps on the couch with my new mom and dad. Last night just before bed I fell asleep on the couch on my new moms legs. She is so nice. I slept on the bed with my new family and was a good girl, Except that my new dad snores more than me! We got up early and I went potty outside.

I have an appointment this afternoon with my new doctor, Dr. Crisp. (cool name for a doctor huh?). My new mom said Dr. Crisp going to check my elbow and just give me the 'once over'. So what's the 'once over'?

Tell dad that I still love him, and you of course and I will never forget you guys. Thanks for the wonderful care and attention you gave me and thanks now for sharing me with my new family. I know I have found my lifetime home and family here.

Well gonna go and see what the rest of the family is doing (you know how nosey I am!)

Love and Licks

Lily.
